Sparrows Point Park
Honoring a family and town’s legacy and giving back to the community.
“This job was particularly special to me because it was constructed within a mile of my grandparents’ house, where my mom, aunt, and uncle grew up and attended Sparrows Point High School. Sparrows Point is best known for the Bethlehem Steel mill. My grandfather worked there as a carman, responsible for safety inspections, brake tests, wheel changes, and railyard repairs back in the day. The red I-beam in the gymnasium signage, which utilizes an I-beam from the now-dismantled steel mill, is representative of this legacy.
I spent a lot of time here as a kid, so it was a treat to work with Karon Masonry—a customer I’ve worked with for over 20 years—and “give back” a small piece to the community.
In a way, I personally consider it a bit of a memorial to my family. It is a very historic area in need of some TLC, and this project delivered that in spades.“
